This book concludes the tale of the Vigil, Earth's guardians against threats both domestic and extraordinarily foreign. Behold the Vigil as they oppose Earth's corrupt governments, a task complicated by anarchic scientist Possum Perturbare's reckless experiments, which threaten the very existence of Earth. Fomalhaut, Stingray, Aureus, and the other members of the Vigil have their hands full as they try to survive the most chaotic situation Earth has ever faced.

Behold the Vigil Endurian Universe Book 8 eBook Joe Bergeron

The final tale of The Vigil is, in many ways, the most fascinating of the trio, as the threads all get tied up not so neatly. We find out who Fomalhaut is, and what the link between his people and the humans of Earth actually is. We also find out how Stingray came to be, and why there's only one of him. Aureus, the Prohibitor from Rral, will definitely surprise you when she reveals who she really is. Meanwhile, Valjhar returns, older, and maybe a little wiser, and we discover that Pimsie never left--and is still mad at Valjhar. Worse, we learn that Possum Perturbare is still making trouble--and getting his and Brainchild's rear ends caught in the trap he set for The Vigil in hopes of forcing them to save humanity.

Unlike the other reviewer, I do NOT care to read The Night Land. What Possum unleashes on Earth through turning it into a horror series on TV is bad enough. But that didn't keep me from reading Behold The Vigil straight through. As always, this tale is full of surprises, richly developed characters forced to grow through adversity, and despite the horror and gloom, still managing, by working together, to find happy endings for themselves, a good part of the population of Earth, and Earth itself.

I am told by the author that he is finishing the ninth book of the Endurian Universe, which will fit in before the first book of the three Vigil tales, and go into more detail about the first visit to Earth of the Space Mariners (hinted at in several places in this trilogy). I look forward to reading it, as well as rereading these three--once I've recovered from this read through.

Perhaps we should be glad our Earth doesn't have super beings fighting over how to save us from ourselves. On the other hand, that leaves us responsible for saving ourselves. It's my hope that if enough people learn about and read all the tales of the Endurian Universe, they may decide to accept reality and their places in it rather than deny both and add to the pain of the species and the planet. The sooner we do this, the better, as we probably have well under 30 years left of our existence if we don't.

Behold the Vigil Endurian Universe Book 8 eBook Joe Bergeron Reviews

So often you put all that time and emotional energy into reading a book or series of books, only to find the ending leaves you flat or disappointed or does not tie up those loose ends that most interested you. Not this one. This concluding book in the Endurian Universe series has the most utterly satisfying, staggeringly imagined conclusion of any book I've read for years. It surpassed the wonderful conclusion to LOTR (the conclusion that was mostly ignored in the film)
I was first utterly hooked for the entire book. Having read all the others, these characters have become old friends by now, so that once I started reading, I was lost to the world for a while but always with that niggling fear the ending might leave me flat. However, this ending was magnificent. I just don't know how anyone could have dreamed this up.
Stingray's "ending" was perfect; it was quite ethereal. I cried for Brainchild, Possum Perturbare and Valjhar. Lori Wu's experience of the frame-shifter was the incisively chosen single human example needed to show how humanity got what they deserved whatever they deserved, leaving all the billions of other human experiences up to our imaginations. I loved seeing what the Lokota inherited. The irony of their whole story was delicious. The best ending was what happened to the planet itself. If only it could happen to the real Earth. Even Ronar and Colibdis were not forgotten, with the ultimate fate of the bronze portal being included.
A series like this, if read by enough people, has the power to really make mankind take a serious look at itself and try to make a change in our human directions. Bergeron demonstrates a (rather chilling) world view that so closely matches my own that I wonder how many millions of other informed people share exactly this view. Every politician should read this book and tremble. It shows what people are thinking.
All the weird and wonderful technology of the story came into its own in the ending. I urge you as you read to keep it all in mind until the end; its all there for a purpose.
Good-bye Fomalhaut. I'll miss you. Then again, I may begin the whole series again, right from the beginning. Its the kind of story well worth a re-read so you can pick up everything you missed the first time. But perhaps I'll grab a copy of The Night Land to read first, so I'm better informed this time.
What an honour it has been to get to be the first to review these books. Thanks to the author for investing so much time in them (a lifetime almost) we appreciate it.
