‘Parcel of Rogues’ is the second novel in the ‘Jock Mackinlay’ series (part 1 – ‘Saskia’s Soldier’ – was published on in January 2015).
Edinburgh, 2014. Scotland votes against independence in the referendum. The news is greeted by a massive and devastating explosion outside the Scottish Parliament building. The tartan terrorists are back, after a hiatus of nearly twenty years.
The Alba Liberation Army terrorised the UK in the early 1990s, bombing and assassinating without compunction. Until one man infiltrated the group and stopped them; Jock Mackinlay, ex-special forces MI5 undercover officer. The terrorists were apprehended and jailed - and Jock melted back into the shadows.
Now Jock’s returned, recalled from extended 'sick-leave' by the machiavellian MI5 chief, John Cairnville. Back on the booze and with his granddaughter on life-support after a hit-and-run car crash, Jock’s not in a good place but Cairnville's desperate and his fragile foot soldier is the only card he has left to play.
Cairnville teams Jock up with Karen Miller. One of the new MI5 breed; she's professional, well-trained and extremely adept at surveillance techniques. Miller doesn't initially bond with the grizzled dinosaur but the fireworks really begin when the brash, super-confident Inspector Jamie Fraser from Special Branch enters the mix. Jock and the younger man embark on a long-term pissing contest which threatens to destabilize the investigation.
As Jock’s past returns to haunt him, and his life goes into meltdown, the terrorists and their horrifying objective are finally identified. Jock, Miller and Fraser converge on the target for a decisive confrontation with their ferocious adversaries; a brutal encounter which will claim lives on both sides.

Excuse my language but, this book was s##t hot! I read it in one sitting and was totally bowled over. The story line is captivating and the characters are 'up in your face'. The authenticity of this novel is amazing, reminding me of the style employed by JG Rickards in Own Goal, another terrorist thriller of immence substance. A must read for the lover of gritty, dirty and decitefull practices of the secret services, ( all on our behalf!)
