Zero Hour Book One

For paramedic Adam Carson, his world is lights and sirens and saving lives. Pressures at work keep him firmly in the closet, and life is too busy to contend with the complications that come with dating and relationships. When a familiar face from his past turns up where he least expects it, Adam starts to question whether or not there is room in his life for those complications.

The last person forensic pathologist Sam McKenna expects to see at pub night is Adam, the guy who made his life hell in high school. The attraction is instant, but Adam isn't gay and Sam has no interest in pursuing him. Still, the leftover animosity from their teenage years isn't enough to extinguish the lust growing between them. After both are called to the scene of a horrific murder, Adam admits he’s not as straight as he led Sam to believe and they seek comfort and distraction in each other's arms. One night becomes many as the murder investigation intensifies, but when Adam is faced with losing Sam, he is forced to make a choice to break his silence, or to give up everything for the job he loves.

This could've been a great story except for the cliffhanger at the end. Those really ruin it for me. I read the blurb for Book 2 regarding Ford's story but since there was no mention of any resolution to Adam and Sam's story, and the fact that I don't want to take a chance on another cliffhanger, I won't be purchasing Book 2.

If authors think writing a story with a cliffhanger encourages the reader to buy future stories, for myself, that is a big huge NO.

A Forced Silence Zero Hour Book 1 edition by Cate Ashwood Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I loved this book. I want a sequel ASAP!
My first book from this author, I absolutely loved it!!!!! Will check out others from Cate Ashwood.
Other reviewers have said most of what I was thinking. Great story line. Adam & Sam (Dex) the heat sizzles between these 2.
Please bring on book 2 soon.
I loved this story when I read the version earlier this year and when I saw that the audio version was now available, I grabbed it and have listened non-stop! Scott R. Smith narration enhanced the story and gave a voice to some really interesting characters. Can't wait for Ford's story, which is next book in the series being published August 25!
I got annoyed with Sam being called Dex by Adam through out the entire story. It was made clear that Adam was the source of Sam's bullying and calling Sam, Dex was another way Adam embarrassed Sam in high school.

So when they met again, I was ready for this more mature confident Sam to tell Adam to f**k off and to use him name, 'Sam!' I was ready for Adam to have to work and I mean work hard to be apart of Sam's life again.

Doesn't happen! Instead, Sam just falls into bed with this supposedly straight dude who made his senior year of high school hell. And, every time Adam points of view comes up, he calls Sam, Dex. But when Sam points of view comes up, he's Sam again. Annoying!

That just frustrated me, that he never told Adam off, didn't make it clear Adam was not to call him Dex (the name he hated in high school and still hates), and Adam didn't have to apologize or work hard to become important in Sam's life. Really? Ugh!

The mystery was ok, the murder broke my heart and the characters were...they just were but not even the ending enticed me to want to continue this story.
This one surprised me in its intensity at every level--not the kind of overwhelming, totally angst-filled intensity that you often get when two men meet again after years of harboring bad, and also lustful, thoughts about each other.

It's intensity that is carried over into the way both Sam (aka Dex, that's important) and Adam live their personal and professional lives--and how the tragic murder they need to solve and their unsalvageable lust and love they develop for each other needs to be settled.

First, both Sam and Adam are totally fleshed out characters. Secondly, their professional dedication as pathologist and paramedic, respectively, is excellent. Thirdly, their respective deep fears of exposing their overwhelming lust, and growing love, for each other, while covering familiar territory, is not muddled up with too much over-the-top thinking. Fourth, supporting characters are well developed enough so they are not clichés. Finally, there are bolts out of the blue here in the plotline, and that eventually is what holds the book together.

What really threw me, however, is the final bolt of the book. I am hoping that it means we get a sequel, because Sam and Adam need to be back in our lives as well as someone else who is just waiting to have his story told. Excellent, solid, fast read.
This was quite enjoyable. Not my favorite trope, man in the closet, but Cate Ashwood conveyed the reasoning well. Adam's job is very important to him and as with many uniformed professions, being gay can put someone at risk in different ways. I didn't like that Sam/Dex and Adam parted ways as they did. I'm also happy that it didn't take the big crisis to have had Adam ready to start changing things. This wasn't really a mystery story but it appears the story arc will include one. I liked the other characters. I'm interested in seeing who Ford is involved with. I have a wish that Jack will turn out to be gay, too, but who knows. I'm sure Caleb will have a story, too. It would be poetic justice if John gets outed as gay, as well. I look forward to the series.
Enjoyable contemporary love story. The main characters, Sam and Adam both work in medicine. Sam is a Forensics Pathologist who is openly gay while Adam hides his preferences. Adam's afraid to come out due to his fear of how his co-workers, and his family (including his cop brother) might treat him. The writing is well done. Ms. Ashwood has enough knowledge to make the scenes real. For instances, many of the calls handled by the medics are nuisance calls. The ambulance station isn't in the best condition and at the hospital, some of the equipment used by Sam is old. The chapters move quick and kept me engaged. Part of the story includes a murder involving a young boy and how the characters deal with the incident emotionally. The ending is a cliffhanger which leads me to expect a sequel is in the works. This is good because there were some issues left unresolved in the book. Over all, I'd recommend it.
