This book captures the triumphant and resilient spirit of one who understands and recognizes God and the Lord Jesus Christ as his redemption, Savior, and path to Eternal Life. This extraordinary collection of poems illustrate an evolving of who he was, to who he is, into the man he is to become…and not based off of merely his own discernments and conditions – no. With God as the Light of His life, his vision of himself and the world are perceived through ‘spiritual’ eyes, rather than the earthly eyes he once used as his life magnifying glass. With this in mind, we find that there is an overwhelming flow of tranquility attached to the author’s poetry, little to no confliction in regards to life and its adversities, and a radiating positive aura that is hard not to absorb!
To begin, we adore the consecrated pieces of poetry which the author includes a part of this edition, allowing us to enter into a place where his innermost supplications are conveyed to God of Heaven and Earth. To provide a brief sample, he prays, “in everything I ask in prayer, and all in which I desire, I pray for a love strong enough to bind Heaven and Earth, tilling a garden in which we can walk, alive and bare, eating fruit sweet as sin and bitter as truth, birthing life in my Father's image, both here and now. Amen” demonstrating and pointing out one of his most prominent and transparent characteristics; love. To us, this prayer gives such great insight into the narrator’s spiritual and personal life, and his imploring of love above all other admirable attributes and elements appear to be in direct correlation with his pure golden heart of consideration and compassion.
The narrator also uses himself indirectly as an example of discipline. Though spirituality typically involves a certain level of unworldly ascension, the narrator is not dismissive of his humanness, weaknesses, or imperfections. His words soak in humility, as he is able to incorporate God’s teachings, Laws, and Commandments into his everyday life with utmost pleasure and delight (which we find to be an admirable veracity)! And with pellucidity, we can envision and are convinced that the author is a wholehearted follower and disciple of Jesus Christ, live, in the flesh.
Once we approach the segment, Words to my Mother Part II My Love the narrator introduces the fact that he is a husband, a blessing that is merely a reflection of God’s favor towards him which he surely does not take for granted! He writes in the most attractive of words his role and responsibility as a husband to his wife, saying; “she enhances my person and trusts me enough to be the custodian of her heart, body, and soul” a remarkable and exceptionally powerful poetic eulogy, penetrating deeply and eliminating any contemplations of vanity or selfishness, period.
He furthermore uses the art of personification to depict his wife saying “I have not heard of a bird which soars as free, or seen one which sings as soulfully as this one, so peacefully perched as she” to indicate his loves unique one-of-a-kind beauty and graceful lovely presence. His words possess such charm in this particular composition, as he extols his wife amidst subtly undermining his own self (in the comparison of her splendid light)
This poem is as beautiful as diamonds, yet priceless and invaluable. It’s artistic aptitude only adds more brilliance to the the actual meaning of the poem; to recognize and honor the woman God gave to him to spend the rest of his life with, bonded seamlessly as one, in spirit, heart, mind, and body. Prior to their union, in the words of the author, “he was just a stray black cat”, as if to imply he was alone, with no home or real foundation. This poem’s profoundness touches us on so many different levels, but what leaves such impactful imprints within the walls of our minds, is how meeting one person (the right person!) can literally change your entire life! From what the narrator describes, he is like a raging thunderstorm and his soulmate subdues such a tempest with her gentle, serene presence. His vision is undoubtedly the epitome of virtue, respect, ardor, and love between a man and woman, and we find it valuable that he is not speaking from a ‘past-tense’ rather than present, making himself credible and all the more inspiring for other men and women working to keep their commitment steady.
In the last segment of this excellent collection, the author writes a letter with the greeting “Dear Momma” and begins to share with us his sentiments of the woman who gave birth to him and instilled the teachings of the Lord God within his soul. The poem, written like a letter, praises his mother and gives thanks for her very existence, something we commend him for deeply. The narrator also discloses in this piece how his beliefs, values, and principles have origins from his mother, he even references to her at one point, figuratively comparing her to the “fertile Earth that pushed and pulled, and raised him up from seed to stem” who “birthed him from her volcanic core” signifying her role in his creation; and then to furthermore illustrate his ultimate evolution, he adds “... like mountains, I have reached freedom, I have grown” with such conviction and candor!
We are extremely impressed by the author’s ability to combine words to produce catching and original metaphors and verses, for example; ‘you speak with the depth of the greatest forest’, ‘a majestic pillar of Mother Nature with a crown for a canopy’, each superior descriptions of his mother who is the main character that the author uses towards the end of the book to conclude his poetic expressions with a strong and concrete finish.
In all honesty, one word comes to mind after reading this book; beautiful. There are vivid dedications written in honor of God, his wife, and his mother that mirror the author’s skill as a poet and heart as a man. Gore’s distinctive technique in finding alternative methods to describe imagery, emotion, and people defines his work with quality, style, and finesse, causing us to be engaged from start to finish! The verses that build and construct this marvelous masterpiece are so memorable and meaningful, it is possible to use almost every other complete thought as a timeless quote! His poetry is far from dull, often intertwining elements of nature and the universe amplifying his creativity.
